Default Bypass Filter - 05-02-2004 , 08:36 PM

I am curious if anyone is running a bypass filter. Some of my friends are
die hard 3K mile oil changers, but balk at augmenting filtering. With some
of the ones I have seen while googlin' it looks like they would pay for
themselves (and save time) within just a year while making an engine last
longer.

They're idiots on both counts.
3k changes are not needed anymore.
Improved filtering is always good, however, be careful. Many Toyota
V6 engines have blown lines on aftermarket filter assemblies.

As for a bypass filter, I am not sold on the fluid routing... I'm not
crazy about the idea of running a portion of my oil around the engine.
I'd simply go with a larger filter, or a kit that replaces the stock
filter with a fitting that allows a bypass housing to be plumbed in
place of it.

Yes and no... if you go beyond 5k/7500 changes, you've blown your
warranty.
Also, I would take ANY claims made by Amsoil with a healthy block of
salt.

Tom, stick with OE, with routine service (3-5K, regardless) you will be
fine.

I've seen tests where they don't do oil changes until every 50k miles and
then they tear the engine down and compare with a mfg suggested oil change
interval engine after like 250k miles. The forensic inspections usually
show no significant difference. I wouldn't recommend this, but personally I
think people who change their oil every 3k miles are a little over-indulgent
on oil changes.

Cheers,

Scott..

depends on the year...

Toyota recommends oil changes on my '92 Corolla at 3750 miles.

I do it at 3000...
