Mechanic said it needs to be replaced from the catalyst to the tailpipe. Now, I typically hit ebay to buy parts for my car -- haven't been let down yet -- and have them shipped to my mechanic. I've looked for exhaust systems and I've seen several ads for "Cat back exhausts" but they all seem like they're oversized / ghetto exhaust systems. What should I look for if I want a replacement / OEM exhaust system? Well, on a HONDA!!! the exhaust pipe is one piece from the cat back. It's two pieces, actually. Sometimes three. |
| Now, on a TOYOTA I have found the OEM from Toyota can actually be less that piecing together an aftermaket system in three pieces with clamps, hangers, etc. And one hell of a long longer-lasting. Aftermarket is made from discarded tin cans and old paper towels. |
| I recommended this to a Honda owner I know and she said the exhaust system from the dealer was about 2.5 times more than aftermarket... Well, yeah, if you compare the aftermarket MUFFLER ONLY with the OEM C-pipe/muffler/tailpipe one-piece assembly. Aftermarket is only cheaper if you ignore the fact that you'll have to go back every spring to fix yet another rust hole. |

I used a tin can to fix the exhaust on my 1977 Corolla long ago.... the Duct tape burned off after every trip. ************ That is why you are supposed to use bailing wire and chewing gum. Those last at least 2 trips! |

That sealant is super high temp, and its like rubber when it hardens.... cheap patch??? |

It depends on what part of the exhaust you are working on. For example, the cat gets a lot hotter than head gasket sealant is probably designed for. |

Auto parts stores have "muffler bandages" and muffler epoxy that are designed for exhaust repairs. Devcon also makes high-temp epoxies and putties. -- Ray O correct the return address punctuation to reply |
