My car, whose brand shall remain nameless, has a bad exhaust system
(rusty pipes, muffler can't do its job, etc). Mechanic said it needs
to be replaced from the catalyst to the tailpipe. Now, I typically
hit ebay to buy parts for my car -- haven't been let down yet -- and
have them shipped to my mechanic.

I've looked for exhaust systems and I've seen several ads for "Cat
back exhausts" but they all seem like they're oversized / ghetto
exhaust systems.

What should I look for if I want a replacement / OEM exhaust system?

Well, on a HONDA!!! the exhaust pipe is one piece from the cat back.

It's two pieces, actually. Sometimes three.
I found one on ebay for $95... looks ok.

Cat Back System Includes

1/# 6b1688 extension pipe

1/# 3b1401 axle pipe

1/# m3012 muffler

1/ 31354 gasket

1/ 31332 gasket

1/ 35129 bolt kit

1/ mc178hd

So uh... it comes with a bunch of stuff. I'm sure my mechanic will be
able to sort it all out. Two pipes and a muffler.

Now, on a TOYOTA I have found the OEM from Toyota can actually be less
that piecing together an aftermaket system in three pieces with
clamps, hangers, etc.

And one hell of a long longer-lasting. Aftermarket is made from discarded
tin cans and old paper towels.

I used a tin can to fix the exhaust on my 1977 Corolla long ago....
the Duct tape burned off after every trip.

I recommended this to a Honda owner I know and she said the exhaust
system from the dealer was about 2.5 times more than aftermarket...

Well, yeah, if you compare the aftermarket MUFFLER ONLY with the OEM
C-pipe/muffler/tailpipe one-piece assembly.

Aftermarket is only cheaper if you ignore the fact that you'll have to go
back every spring to fix yet another rust hole.
This one looks fine. Its all clean and shiny. Like I said, I've
bought quite a few parts from ebay for my cars, haven't gone wrong yet.
(of course that's purely anecdotal, and not worthy of any
distribution).

That is why you are supposed to use bailing wire and chewing gum. Those
last at least 2 trips!

Seriously though... how about a huge glob of head gasket sealant and a
tin can??? That sealant is super high temp, and its like rubber when
it hardens.... cheap patch???

It depends on what part of the exhaust you are working on. For example, the
cat gets a lot hotter than head gasket sealant is probably designed for.
Auto parts stores have "muffler bandages" and muffler epoxy that are
designed for exhaust repairs. Devcon also makes high-temp epoxies and
putties.

Especially if you use Russian chewing gum. That stuff lasts forever. It's
also good for fixing tires.

500 degrees F is pretty hot! It would probably work on most parts except
the cat, which may get hotter than that.
