Default CAT Back Exhaust? - 10-31-2005 , 10:12 AM

My car, whose brand shall remain nameless, has a bad exhaust system
(rusty pipes, muffler can't do its job, etc). Mechanic said it needs
to be replaced from the catalyst to the tailpipe. Now, I typically hit
ebay to buy parts for my car -- haven't been let down yet -- and have
them shipped to my mechanic.

I've looked for exhaust systems and I've seen several ads for "Cat back
exhausts" but they all seem like they're oversized / ghetto exhaust
systems.

What should I look for if I want a replacement / OEM exhaust system?

Richard -

This would seem an appropriate accessory, so you can hang tight with
your homeys. LOL

Hey, I bet one of those would work way better than DRLs!

Try searching for "1 piece exhaust" or "one piece exhaust" or "OEM exhaust"
and see if you have better luck.

Well, on a HONDA!!! the exhaust pipe is one piece from the cat back.

It's two pieces, actually. Sometimes three.

Now, on a TOYOTA I have found the OEM from Toyota can actually be less
that piecing together an aftermaket system in three pieces with
clamps, hangers, etc.

And one hell of a long longer-lasting. Aftermarket is made from discarded
tin cans and old paper towels.

I recommended this to a Honda owner I know and she said the exhaust
system from the dealer was about 2.5 times more than aftermarket...

Well, yeah, if you compare the aftermarket MUFFLER ONLY with the OEM
C-pipe/muffler/tailpipe one-piece assembly.

Aftermarket is only cheaper if you ignore the fact that you'll have to go
back every spring to fix yet another rust hole.

I put a Borla cat-back system on my IS300. All 304 stainless steel, great
looking (no ghetto fart cans) and a nice mellow sound. Adds about 10 hp
according to Borla.

Actually I just went through this with my Sisters '97 Civic last weekend.
Her exhaust system is in two parts - a pipe with resonator that runs from
the catalytic converter to the area of the rear axle and a muffler that
takes over from there to the rear of the car. The muffler was actually the
more expensive part, although it was much shorter. Like most Honda stuff,
the original was well made. The 8+ year old bolts were easily removed and
reusable. It appeared to me that the pipe with resonator was stainless
steel. The original muffler rusted out last year and was replaced with one
from an on-line Honda parts dealer. She damaged that one by backing into
something, which broke the welds on the exhaust exit pipe. I needed a new
muffler in a hurry, so I picked up one at the local CarQuest store. It was
much more expensive than the on-line part, but also appeared to be better
made (none of the three were stainless steel though).

I went to the local Mom & Pop Muffler store in my town when I had this sort
of issue to deal with. They set me up in about an hour. I don't understand
what the question is because the answer is so easy. Go to the store and buy
a muffler and CAT. Have the store install it. It really is that easy. Tell
the people at the muffler store what your goal is in the project at hand
because they do lots of Custom Jobs that make cars sound really stupid if
you give them free rein.

I recomment that you DO NOT visit the national chain stores, and stick with
the Mom & Pop places.

An alternative is to tell your mechanic that you want to stay with an OEM
system, and let him go find the stuff and put it on.

Personally, I'd not take the mechanic's word for it unless you've been using
him for a long time and trust his judgement. This is one of those jobs where
crappy mechanics like to take advantage of unsuspecting customers.

They are for people with less than adequate Penis length and horse
power.
If you want flames, how sad, if you happen to get them as a by product
of gaining maximum horse, so be it.
