Hardly.

Point taken, but it sure ain't BIG NEWS when a prominent black person
uses the "offensive" language... They sure don't get fired for it, or
have to apologize for it, either.

On the other hand, how many black guys are on talk radio, nationally.

However, I do not disagree with your observation diz old boy. The one
who comes to mind is the late Richard Pryor. He was funny, but wow and
the same venue as Imus, cable TV.

'fraid not, guys. Richard Pryor's racial references were never hostile, and
certainly not to non-blacks. And leave us not forget; the glory days of
Pryor were the 1980s. Imus needs to live in the now.

Having said that, I think there has been a lot of overreaction to this
thing, but I do think canning him is appropriate. Too bad it's not done
more often to even more deserving people.

I think the black community needs to address its own house before they
go
banging on the neighbor's door.

You're assigning a stereotype to the black community; which is the same
thing that Imus did.

By the way, once you scrape off the racist topping, Imus called these
girls, whom he does not know at all, "whores." That ought to be enough
to get him sacked in an ostensibly civilized country. I've forbidden
certain radio stations in our house for similar reasons. My wife agrees.

One more time ...

Imus is gone, and good riddance to him. But, the point isn't Don Imus. The
point is the black community is riddled with men that same the exact same
thing, and THEY are encouraged to do so while Dom Imus is chastised. I
agree that Don put his ass squarely into the wringer, I only wonder why
it's a bad thing when he does it but not when everybody else does it.
"Everybody else" does not do it. YOU ARE STEREOTYPING the black community.
There's black people living in my neighborhood. They're black PEOPLE. They
won't allow their kids to use racist terminology and they certainly don't
need to hear Don Imus saying it, either.

And if you thnk there's some racial double-standard here, then I suggest you
think about these kids on the basketball team as PEOPLE and there was no
reason at all for Don Imus to call them "whores."

Who encourages it? Young guys with lowered rides and over-amped bass
don't speak for every African-American person in the US. You just can't
help yourself with that broad brush of yours.

I don't really care who encourages it, I want to see guys just like me
speaking out against it no matter whom says it. It's disengenous to get
outraged at Imus but not the others. If I get a little bit of paint on
you, then speak out against the examples I give, don't sit there and
defend offensive speech.

You don't know or care who encourages it, but you are darn sure that it is
encouraged! Kinda FOS aren't ya?

You completely miss the point.

The behavior is rampant. Black entertainers -- particularly rap artists (I
use the term loosely) and hip hop singers (again, a loos intrepretatino) --
can be counted on to disparage women in song. To the extent the
disparagement is not ridiculed and rejected, it is encouraged. I think that
it is encouraged, indeed there is evidence it is cheered.

While I am appalled that Imus would say what he said, I'm especially
appalled that anybody would say what he said, and the only outrage comes
after Imus said it. There is a huge double standard happening here, and
nobody seem to be willing to admit it, especially not those in the community
where the double standard exists. Blatantly offensive language is used on a
regular basis, and the only guy to use it and then appologize for his
stupidity is being fired.

Let's be clear here, I don't give a rat's ass about Imus. He is a blithering
idiot if you ask me. But, he is taking a bad rap here because he merely
repeated the exact same words that come from the community he insulted, and
the community only registered the insult because Imus did it. I accept the
premise that he made an insulting remark, but the major icons of the
community use the same kinds of insults to sell their "music." Nigger and
nappy haired ho are an insult no matter who's mouth the words come out of.
If one is going to be righteously indignant for one to utter those words,
then they ought to be righteously indignant for all that utter those words.

That is the only point that is worth discussion. There is no broad paint
brush here that I am slinging around.

Rappers are selling millions of dollars worth of insults and disparagement,
and they mostly sell it into the community they insult and disparage. Don't
come at me with the mainstream radio crap, cause it isn't gonna sell here.
If it is an insult to call somebody nigger or a nappy haired ho, then it
should be an insult no matter whom uses the term. Any other standard is a
racist one. It is silly in this day and age that only one race can be
accused of racism. The irony that escapes you is that the very people -- Al
and Jesse -- that play the race card in this instance are perhaps the most
racist people in America today. That my friend is a fact.

Don Imus is gone and already forgotten, but the issue is political
correctness run amok. And it will remain with us for a very long time.

There IS a double standard, just look at Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson, and
now Snoop Dogg. There is a very long list of black entertainers that are
encouraged to insult black women. Surely all blacks are not thrilled at the
idea, and I'm certain there is a long list of people just like your
neighbors. I'd bet my last dollar that the list of people that would permit
such language from a black entertainer is much longer than the list that
objects (and I assume do not attend shows put on by those entertainers).

I sat here and watched both Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson say (I'm
paraphrasing here), it's different when our people do it. All I'm saying is
that it is no different, and Al and Jesse should be leading the charge to
clean up rap music if this kind of stuff bothers them so much. If they are
unwilling to take charge, then they should shut the hell up. I would state
emphatically that the vast majority of us wouldn't even know that Imus said
"nappy haired ho" if it were not for Al and Jesse.

No he didn't, not in the literal sense. The word "ho" is not
generally interpreted literally in the sexual sense.

Sorry, you're wrong white-boy. "Ho" refers to skanky, promiscuous women;
just as the word "whore" implies.

Natalie

I almost want to un-killfile that idiot just to see what stupid shit he'll
say next.

Dizzy, ho is a street term that means whore. Period. One can not say to a
woman, "come over here ho, and I mean that in the most respectful way
possible." Because, there is absolutely no respect possible when you call a
woman a ho. That is what Imus is in trouble for.
