Default How good are the mechanical wheel alignment devices? - 06-26-2003 , 10:26 AM

I recently saw an advertisement in tool catalog for a mechanical wheel
alignment device. It looks like a pretty basic item for which one
has to put the tires on it to set alignment. The thing sells for
about $150. How good are these things and is it worth the
investment?

Thanks, Al Kondo

I would think it would be good only for a toe-in or toe-out
alignment. It may not cover caster or camber alignment.
For $150 you could get 3 or more professional quad alignments
from you local dealer.

But you can check camber with two small (8in/20cm) sprit levels set at
90 degrees and use a rule to measure the gap to the rim. If camber is
out most cars need to go on a jig and be pulled into place as there is
no camber adjuster. Or you have to file the top shock mount holes
into slots and put plates on the top mounts. Again for caster and kpi
only way to set these other than pulling the car around on a jig is
after market suspension parts.

Actually I've found a good bit of adjustment lies in the sloppy fit of the
lower strut mount bolts.
Could you further describe yur process?
A little trig is involved ;-) am I right?
I still have my old machinist book so I guess I can handle that part
THANKS
