That's funny, as I looked at the thing and my first thought was that it
would be hopeless on anything other than perfectly flat ground as it
doesn't have independent "legs".
Watching the thing turn my first thought was it would be hopeless on rough
ground because half of the legs were sliding and something would have bent
if one or 2 legs got caught.

Looks like it still needs some refining :-)

I think the guy's already wasted enough time on it.

Fucked if I know why people dedicate thousands of hours & dollars into
things that have the entertainment value of a kid's wind up toy

Hard to explain, but I too have put many hours into projects that to others
deem a waste of time.

Sometimes the creation is the attraction, not functionality of the end
result.

I know that feeling.

I spent 5 years (and many thousands of dollars) restoring my WWII Willys
jeep so it was a "down to the last nut & bolt" perfect restoration, but it
was a total pig to drive when it was finished and the novelty of driving it
wore off in around ten minutes.

The fun, for me at least, was the journey of the restoration. Not the
completed project.

But you've at least got something that is resaleable.

Did have.

It now resides in a military museum in Kerang.

Was it bought or did you donate it?

It was bought.

I wasn't planning on selling it, but happened to meet the curator by chance.
He made me an offer I couldn't refuse, and as I hadn't driven it for a while
I decided to let it go up there for other people to appreciate rather than
spend it's life sitting in the corner of my garage.
