Default MR2 engine replacement. Houston area - 01-30-2004 , 02:42 PM

Anybody have a suggestion for suppliers of rebuilt/reconditioned R22s
for the MR 2, the bottom end trashed itself on mine. Maybe a just the
block would work as the heads had recently been reworked.

TIA

I thought MR2s had 4A-GEs? What generation is this one?

Those are MKI's.

USDM MKII's have either the 2.2L 5SFE or the 2.0L 3SGTE.

Again, I would recommend the MR2 owner's club for some
suggestions.

http://www.board.mr2faq.com

There's a buy/sell section and a Texas area section.

So no MR2 ever came OEM with the 22R. As I suspected.

Why would anyone put a truck engine in a sports car?

I don't know, why wouldn't they? Ask DaimlerChrysler why they put
that big cast-iron V-10 truck motor in the Viper... ;-) And from
further back in history, why would they put a 440 6-pack in a Dart?

(Simple answer from the Tim Taylor school: More POWER...)

Now we need to get Toyota to build a serious "sleeper". Right after
they get a real 1-ton truck out so I can drive something reliable for
work for a change...

Viper has an ALUMINUM block V10.

http://dodge.jbcarpages.com/Viper/2002/
"Even the engine block is a work of art. Its massively deep-skirted
design, with six-bolt main bearings, seems clearly intended for
racing, despite its prosaic origins. (The Viper's aluminum 8.0-liter
V10 is based on the cast-iron Dodge Ram truck engine.)"

The 440 RB "wedge" was a shoe horn fit in the A-body Dart. No need to
rev the engine much to move a relatively light car.

Bill Strong, the owner of the MR2 owner's club forum/BBS is putting
in a Northstar V8 into one of his MKI's.

http://www.racingstrong.com/toystar/

Aside from this effort, there had been several other MK1.5++ jobs with
V6's. IIRC, someone even dropped a truck engine in one, but the engine
was physically too tall for the lid to be placed back on.

A lot of talented people with too much time on their hands.

it still was based on the Ram 2500 V-10, the bore stroke on them is the
same.

Back to the Toyota question...

I believe some of the Celicas had the 22R. It's not just a truck
engine.
