Toyota has the highest buyer loyalty, that is, the highest percent of people
who own a brand of vehicle who buy another one. Toyota also had the highest
buyer loyalty for midsized SUV (Lexus), Compact Pickup (Tacoma), prestige
luxary car (LS 430) and midsize car (Camry).

And, just because a Toyota is sitting on a Ford used car lot doesn't mean
that the Toyota was traded in for a Ford dealer. Used cars are often bought
wholesale and sold to dealers for resale.

Not arguing the similarity between the xB and the Element, but there
are three models of Scion (tC owner).

40% of US car buyers will not consider a foreign car of any sort. Never
mind what's "better," they aren't willing to consider them. They think a
Fusion built in Mexico is a US car just because it says "Ford" on the front.
Juan, Diego and Roberto in Hermasillo all say, "Gracias, Yanquis!"

Of course, if I want a car that's built right, I think I'd rather take my
chances with a car built by Ed, Dave and Tom in Georgetown, Kentucky. But
that's just me.

Anyway, once you factor out the xenophobes, economics tells us that the rest
of us find that a Detroit brand car with substantially more options for
substantially less money than a Camry is an equivalent value.

At these price levels, those of us who value gewgaws (options, that is) over
reliability will gravitate to the Detroit brands. Those of us who value
reliability over gewgaws will gravitate to the Toyotas.

I saw the CR auto issue today; Toyota owners are very loyal. Between them,
Honda/Acura and Toyota/Lexus/Scion make up not quite half the cars with 80%
"yes" responses to "Would you buy this car again?" GM, Ford and Chrysler
only got "yes" responses at the 80% level for the Corvette, Mustang (V8
only, the V6 does not get that loyalty), Solstice (wait 'til they've owned
it a few years and enjoyed that legendary Pontiac quality), Charger,
Lucerne, Tahoe and Yukon. None of the domestics' vaunted pickups reached
80% "yes" levels and many did no better than 50% (interpretation: the Tundra
DOES stand a chance of stealing business).

For those annoyed by these statistics and interested in revisiting the
entirely bullshit allegations of CR bias in favor of imports, CR listed the
Fusion as one of the four "Most Impressive" new cars (so would I) and the
Yaris as one of the "Most Disappointing." None of their "Fun to Drive"
picks are Toyotas (Hey! My Ravs are fun to drive!). That list includes the
Corvette, Focus ZX4 ST and Cadillac CTS-V.

To its credit, Detroit is producing some pretty good cars and CR does
recognize this (I never thought I'd live long enough to see a "Fun to Drive"
Cadillac, grandpa's were all total barges). However, Detroit is still
playing catch-up in a lot of areas (see CR's reliability rankings) and CR
did not recommend any Detroit brands as Top 10 picks (reliability counts -
sorry Rick, Al and Dr. Z).

More Ford F-150 buyers were repeat buyers than any other brand.

And GM has the highest buyer loyalty for a car maker.

I opinion is that CR and Car and Driver are biased towards the Japanese.

Biased doesn't mean that they won't pick American cars, but being from
Toyota, Nissan, Honda or Subaru makes it easier to get picked.

However, while most Toyota models are reliable, the Michigan 3 do make some
reliable cars. And some very unrliable cars, too.

And, the Michigan 3 trucks are also very reliable. I don't know if the
Toyotae and Honda Ridgeline will stack up against them, yet.

The problem for the D-3 is that many of their victims have chosen not to
forget what they went through. I certainly won't. I don't care WHAT they
make now. I'd need a 5 year money back guarantee before I'd touch another
D-3 car. My definition of "car" includes "standard maintenance is fine", and
"no problems that indicate sloppiness, for the life of the car, which in my
mind is around 200k miles". Around 5 years, I'll know if I was sold a car,
or a prank.

That chart merely shows GM had a higher percentage of the smaller market
back then. GM today still sells more vehicles than they did in day of yor.

The premise of the article was who sells the better vehicles in teh US.
You guys may well believe Toyotas are better, but American buyers say GM and
Ford, as well, are better when it comes time to spend their money. They
both still outsell Toyota in the US.

It is nice for a runner to say. 'I did better in this race than I have in
any race I've ever run.' But if he didn't win, he still lost every race.no
matter their standing at the finish .

Calm down, Mike.
Mike doesn't like to be confused with facts, like the graphic showing the
GM red line heading south for the past 27 years, and the two other
Michigan mfrs barely holding their head above water.

Most sales does not mean best car maker.

Or you would be arguing that the Corolla is the best car. And has been for
the last several years.

And what is "far more?" GM sold just under 109,000 cars last month. Toyota
sold just over 106,000 cars last mouth. That is a difference of about
2.5%. I wouldn't call that "far more." I would say, "a little more."

Particularly considering that GM has far more brands and dealers than
Toyota.

Jeff

I wonder if price has anything to do with it. What do you think?
