They come 70-250CC and are capable of speeds up to 80 MPH, but have no
regulation whatsoever. In my area, people with these things dart around
like they're the only thing on the road.

I'm waiting for the first fatality...

Don't know about there but here push bike riders are subjects to the
same road rules as a car and you can get booked for things like drunk
riding, running red lights etc.

I can't speak for your state but in Ohio and Indiana these things are
called motorbikes. You need a motorcycle operator's license to ride
one of them. They are required to obey all traffic laws and MUST be
ridden in the street, not the sidewalk.

When I was a kid (in the 1950's) and a bike was my only means of
transportation, there were companies selling these conversion kits for
bicycles. I don't know how big the engines were but they advertised
that you could go up to about 40 mph and get 250 mpg. I knew one kid
who bought one (his dad paid for it). It threw him once when he tried
to see how fast it would go, seems like bike wheels and tires aren't
very well balanced. The vibrations from the engine broke all the
welds on the frame. It was a waste of money then and probably still
is today.

Reminds me of a friend's son, who was pulled over and given a written
warning for speeding on a skateboard by a cop on a bicycle. This was a
suburban area where the most people are too lazy to walk anywhere and so
sidewalks are mostly empty. I asked him how fast he was going, and he said
that the cop paced him at 10 MPH. I didn't know this, but the town where
he lives apparently has a 5 MPH speed limit for skateboards on village
sidewalks!

I thought about one of those for 5 seconds. Just doesn't fit my needs.
Modern Mopeds. Vespas et al are cool, and the better ones can keep up (I
had a Vespa *SMOKE* my Supra at a stop light today) but those 50cc things
are a nuisance! Esp when they think they can ride at 25 MPH in a 45 MPH
zone.

Not to mention the possibility of being street pizza.
