Default My brush(es) with death... - 04-04-2007 , 03:44 PM

I was zooming along to work today, in my 2000 Echo, when I went to change
lanes, and barely missed smacking into the rear of a Caddy...by inches, if
even that. (would have been totally my fault)

Further up the road, a huge cab-type truck (Dodge) nearly ran me off the
road, but right about that time, I noticed my car started vibrating very
violently. I figured my well-worn tires sprang a leak somewhere, but I had
no idea of just how badly the tire had *exploded!* The nearest place to
pull in was a used-car dealership, called "Classic Motors" which only sells
domestic cars/trucks/vans. I felt really intimidated with all those Fords,
Dodges, etc. surrounding my little rice-burner. LOL I never heard an
explosion or popping, but then my iPod is usually blaring pretty loudly.

Is it normal for a blow-out to be this severe? Somehow, I think I'd be
toast if I'd made it to the highway:

http://s195323775.onlinehome.us/PageImages/Tire2.jpg

http://s195323775.onlinehome.us/PageImages/Tire3.jpg

http://s195323775.onlinehome.us/PageImages/Tire4.jpg

That tire looks like someone slashed it. I went ahead and replaced them
all, since Arizona and Florida were very tough on them. My son had insisted
the car was out of alignment, but it really wasn't, though it pulled the
left. Doesn't do that anymore.

Oh, well.

What kind of tire was that? And, which of the large staff of servants was
responsible for checking its pressure how often? I'm not saying that was the
cause, just wondering.

You were very fortunate to have escaped that expedition unscathed. The tire
bears the very distinctinctive signs of an attack by the tire-eating road
shark, a native of warm climates. The most effective way to prevent road
sharks from attacking your tires is to keep them inflated to at least 3 or 4
PSI above the tire pressure listed on the door frame or glove box lid for
your car. That way, the tire becomes hard enough to make it difficult for
the road shark to chew through.

Seriously, the damage to the tire looks more like the result from being run
flat than from a blowout.

Glad you're safe, keep those tires pumped up!

That tyre looks like it was shafted a long time before the blowout. Either
low pressure or lots of kerb-scuffing- the sidewalls look truely dead.

Tyres have a lifespan as well as a wear limit, that should be noted. Can you
imagine the consequences if you'd been at high speed?

I thought they were inflated enough - my son usually checks that.

I think hubby's trying to get rid of you. He should be inspecting your car
weekly, which should include checking the tire pressure.

At 30 or 40 MPH, the tire could get trashed like that in under a mile. At
55 MPH, the distance is probably more like a 1/4 mile.

People complain about car-nannies like seat belt reminder chimes, headlight
auto-off, and low tire pressure monitors, but personally, I kind of like
having a backup ;-)
