The other day the Speech Police (my wife) gave me a bunch of grief for referring to one of our neighbors as "the guy who's crippled". That's because its rude. I had to walk with crutches and a cane for a year when I was a teen, and I hated being called "crippled". It infuriated me. Richard, everything offends you. Lighten up, man. so you don't think its rude? |

so you don't think its rude? http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=crippled Nothing offensive in this definition. Fine then, arsebutt. Print that for others' perusal if you're so damn concerned about it. Does it feel comfortable to call folks crippled, when you take a nanosecond to think about it before you say it? |

Why not say "the guy who walks with crutches" or >something? You're a smart guy -- without too much extra mental >effort you can find another way to say it. I hate it when people confuse >mental effort with political corectness. |
|
It seems this word is not allowed anymore in our >politically correct society. You can say it, if you want to sound like an ass >hole. |

Crippled is a perfectly good term, just because you find it offensive doesnt mean its wrong. If I was to call a short person short they might find it offensive but i wouldnt be wrong to say it and why should i pussyfoot about trying to make it sounds less offensive, why not just accept what you are and stop putting the blame for your bad feelings on other people. Ive things about me i dont like, people point them out and i could take offense but i realise they are simply mentioning the truth and dont mean offense, so i chuckle about it with them. Its all down to common sense and not taking yourself too seriously. J Exactly...exactly...my thoughts precisely... |

In article <1129837007.313843.241780 (AT) o13g2000cwo (DOT) googlegroups.com>, learningrichard (AT) gmail (DOT) com says... That's because its rude. I had to walk with crutches and a cane for a year when I was a teen, and I hated being called "crippled". It infuriated me. Calling someone a cripple in a derogatory way is just like anything else. Unacceptable. However, calling someone crippled because they are is a different game. If I said, "he is black", it is different to "dirty black bastard". If I say "ask dave he is Jewish" on a question about Judeasism, it is different to "dirty stinking Jew". If some one said "Carl is the white guy over there", fine no worries, if they said "Oh Carl, yeah, just another white fat fucker", I would be offended. |
