Calling someone a cripple in a derogatory way is just like anything
else.
Unacceptable.
However, calling someone crippled because they are is a different
game. If I said, "he is black", it is different to "dirty black
bastard". If I say "ask dave he is Jewish" on a question about
Judeasism, it is different to "dirty stinking Jew".

If some one said "Carl is the white guy over there", fine no
worries, if they said "Oh Carl, yeah, just another white fat
fucker", I would be offended.

Just pure common sense of course...

No for Christ's sake it's just a friggin WORD which means that
your limbs don't work for whatever reason...why should a
descriptive word be offensive?
If you were disabled in some way would you want me to call you a
cripple?

because that's a subjective insult, stupid.

Me, too. A friend and I rolled a 67 Beetle,ha.(He was unscathed).
Of course that's different than having Polio or something.

called "crippled". It
infuriated me.

I used the word myself. Somebody would call and want to go do something
and I'd say can't do it, I'm too crippled up, mannn.

Why not say "the guy who walks with crutches" or >something? You're a
smart guy -- without too much extra mental >effort you can find another
way to say it. I hate it when people confuse >mental effort with
political corectness.

I resented it whenever someone used the word cripple with a connotation of
pity. But that's their problem. It's not the word, it's the connotation
given it.

It
seems this word is not allowed anymore in our >politically correct

You can say it, if you want to sound like an ass >hole.

We should'nt let ignorant people ruin words. We'll just have to keep
changing them. In 10 yrs we'll be looking for a replacement to
"disabled".

DISABLED you say!?!...damn...that's an insult!...means that he's
NOT ABLE!...an insult I say!... Gee...

Yup.
I go even one step further than that.
I know all cultures tend to have a section of jokes about another.
It is normal.
I will tell black/asian/ageist/sexist jokes, for one simple reason, they
are funny. If they aren't funny, just cruel or sick, I won't tell them.
I laughed at Richard Prior in the 70's/80's talking about being "glad of
his Mamma bringing in white tricks, and raising the tone of the
neighbourhood", and generally "trashing white folks". Why? because that
guy was/is as funny as shit. Eddy Murphy, Felix Dexter, Richard
Blackwood etc do the same.
If you can get it in the US, try to locate copies of "Goodness Gracious
Me" and "The Real McCoy". One is Asian/Indian/Pakistani, the other Black
Afrocaribean. The are both written by the cast, and play on the
stereotypes of both white and black/asian UK residents. A lot of my
white friends don't get how I, an average white 30 something gets black
or asian humour. What is to get, I might not understand every reference,
but if it is funny, it will come across, even if I'm too ignorant to
work out exactley why/how I'm being insulted.

I laugh at Jo Brand and Jenny Eclair, and they mock mysoginistic man
hater humour.
I do know of a guy who touts himself as "britains funniest iranian
comic".

All those three groups of comic tell a lot of jokes about average fat
white guys, sometimes about them having more money than brains. No
problem with that. If it is funny I will laugh.

Words can be pretty powerful, but as with anything, our own emotional
baggage determines our reactions to those words.

I agree with your comment about Richard Pryor - that guy is such a fantastic
storyteller, he could get away with saying anything! I have all of his
albums on CD, and got the chance to see him live in Denver, back in 1979.
The difference in listening to his records vs. seeing him live is one I
hadn't considered...on the albums, you have breaks between the jokes, but
live, he just keeps going. It actually *hurts* to see him in concert,
because you haven't caught your breath from the last joke, before he's onto
the next! I was amazed to see not only a lot of whites, but *elderly*
whites as well! Just goes to show that if you do it right, you can amuse
*everyone*. But Murphy tried too hard, and just came off looking ignorant,
IMO (Especially his gay 'humor') - I think Murphy's a much better comic
actor, but Pryor I think was always a much better standup than actor, though
he did OK as an actor. Never heard of the others you mentioned.

Its all about the tone used while saying it - its a perfectly
functional and inert descriptive word unless used in an insulting
sentence - it only takes common sense to seperate them. If we had to be
careful about everything people could hear as a 'subjective insult'
we'd have to ban most of the descriptive words in the dictionary,
instead we employ common sense. Well, most of us do.
If you want to sound like an oversensitive ass you're going the right
way. The only reason you see it as an insult is because *YOU* assume
everyone thinks it reflects (reflected) somehow on your worth as a
person, as opposed to being just used as a descriptive term for the
problem. Moaning about the use of these words is simply highlighting
your own insecurities.
