Thumping noise from front end of '97 Toyota Corolla -

After 18000 miles from purchasing it used (76k used; now 94k miles),
my '97 Corolla has developed a front end noise (more left wheel to
steering wheel) that starts at 30 mph and increases in severity. There
is no vibration at the steering column. It sounds like a thump thump
noise, so I bought new tires for the front, and the thumps still
remain and at the same intensity and pattern (increasing thumps with
increasing speed). I put the car in neutral at 70mph to see if the
noise changed and it did not, so I don't think it's the transmission.
I bought the car from a used Toyota dealer in San Diego 1 1/2 years
ago. It probably was sitting on a lot for a considerable period of
time. I have had no other problems except for a starter early on.
Any ideas what could be causing the thumping noise????
