One of the Toyota financers told me that Toyota makes a majority of their
money off of services rather than car sales. Is that true?

Likely, IME. I paid $200 over dealer cost for my last car; the salesman
admitted that they'd make their money off me in the service dep't. rather
than the sale itself. (He knew that I get all my cars' servicing, incl.
routine oil, etc. there.)

Cathy
Did you buy their 7 year warranty or their other packages? I was just
wondering how much they make on those when the services may be rarely
needed.

Dealers can make more money servicing cars than on the sale of cars.

Toyota makes little, if any money servicing cars since Toyota does not
service customer cars.

Most automakers work the same way.

and i bought it...

No. Toyota makes the majority of its money by selling the products it
makes - cars and trucks.

On the other hand, many dealers make more money on finance, insurance, and
aftermarket accessory sales associated with the sale of a vehicle than on
the actual sale of the vehicle.

Splitting hairs, but a good call none the less. Most of us see Toyota and
Toyota Dealers as being one and the same, but your point is that they are
not the same, and you are correct.

Wouldn't it be kind of subjective? I mean, in NH, our cars went through
particular types of hell, in AZ, yet another hell, and California,
another still. I could say how particular maintenance could produce
quite a bit of revenue.

Kind of makes sense, really.

Perhaps weather and terrain play a role. Indeed, they most likely do.
Nonetheless, when a transmission is ready to go its ready to go. But also
you have to wonder how often you pay for the 7 year warranty and never use
it. They are making a ton off of billing you for something that most
likely will not go wrong.

Yup - just another type of damned insurance for peace of mind. No, make
that piece of our money.

:-P

Hehehe - the harder anyone tries to sell my hubby on something, the less he
wants it. He can't stand high-pressure sales. He walks.

I think Ray was trying to point out that Toyota dont make any cash from
repairs as Toyota dont repair cars, the dealers do who are not Toyota
themselves, just have bought the right to use the name/logos etc. Dealers
will make a fair amount off maintenance.

Yeah, that's what he said later.

Another term for an extended warranty is insurance. I am sure they expect to
make money on it, otherwise they wouldn't sell it. And dealers make money on
it too.
