Default 1998 VW Sharan - cutting out problem - 06-11-2009 , 07:40 AM

Hi

I have a 1998 VW petrol Sharan which has just started to have a really
annoying problem.

I can start the car cold, drive for a few miles with absolutely no problems.
Either 2 things will then happen:

1. I can park the Sharan, turn the engine off try and try to start 5-10
minutes later and it just won't start. Turns over and fires and
occasionally chugs but just wont start.
or
2. Same symptoms as above but whilst driving. Total loss of power and
eventually dies.

If the car is left 30 mins upwards it will then start and drive normally
again for a period of time before it happens again.

What I have done so far is changed to fuel filter and the crankshaft sensor
but to no avail. I've googled around and some other problems it could be:
Ignition, Fuel pump, coil...........(no doubt probably more as well that I
haven't come across)

Just wondering if anybody else experienced the same problem and if they
found a cure, rather than me spending loads of money on each different
'could be this...'.

Any help greatly appreciated.

What engine? Could be a coil or hall sensor problem.

Engine is a 2.0L.

I have been told that, by someone that was supposed to have worked for VW,
and he has said that the coil packs were always failing so I think that is
my next step.

Thanks for the replies.

I will post the results, just in case it may help someone else.

Thanks

Definitely get it scanned and see what shows up if anything.
^^^^Is the answer. It could be many things, scanning is the first step.

Hi

Thanks guys for all your help. Problem now solved.

Couldn't really afford to get it hooked up to a Diagnostics machine, so
thought I would try the cheaper option of £16 (and keeping my fingers
crossed) for a coil. Swapped it over....job done...all cured....

Many thanks.

There used to be a time that coils never went bad.

Good to hear that it's running again!!!
