Default Audi 80 Heater Fan Switch Problem - 01-29-2004 , 06:17 PM

Hi Group,

The fan speed control swith which controls warm air blowing inside the car
has a problem, only level III is working, I and II has no actions at all.

Where can I get a spare part for this or id it repairable?

Thanks

Chris

Probably only the thermal fuse in the resistor pack has gone - very common
on older (80s) VWs. The component looks like a small torpedo shape
resistor, and Maplins electronics will sell you another thermal fuse (about
180 degC, ISTR) for maybe £1 or less. Don't solder it in unless you hold
the wire with pliers as a heat-sink or you may melt the new one! Twisting
the wires in parallel with the old one will do.
The resistor pack is on the side of the motor. Check the motor rotates
freely, as stiffness can cause the resistors to overheat and melt the
thermal fuse.

I think the complete resistor unit is about £20 - should be on the GSF or
Eurocarparts website.

Sounds like your ballast resistor has gone, think GSF and ECP should
sell them. Mounts to the side of the fan unit usually.

Thanks for your advise, but then which part of the car I need to mess around
with?

I mean just the control panel or the heater fan unit?

HI,

Thanks for your help.

But when u say motor, do u mean the heater fan itself?

The same principle applies wherever the motor or resistance pack is; the
common resistor to speeds 1 and 2 isn't operating - check your manual or
take a look at where the airflow hoses go. Later VWs have the blowers under
the dash.
It's even possible if your car is v. old that there is a separate wire
wrapped resistor arrangement with the blower motor under the bonnet (early
80s Polos have those), but that's pretty unsophisticated.
As it's an Audi, why not ask on an Audi group?
