I bought a "p" reg t4 caravelle a couple of months ago with 120,000
miles.

I have some receipts for previous work but no service schedule.

Just wondering what the oil change interval is and whether more frequent
changes would improve engine life?

Also, what is the recommended oil?


I ask this because a search on google turned up documents on
environmental advantages of vw's long oil change interval so I wonder if
this is becomming more of an issue than optimum engine life?

15000km or about 9000 miles, or once per year, whichever comes first.

For mainly short trips I'd halve the above. I generally look at the oil on
the dipstick - If it's thick and black, I change it!

20w50 or 15w40 for the UK. Depends on typical operating temperatures. I've
been using whatever mineral oil I have to hand for the other vehicles, and
haven't had any problems. The basic Halfords stuff is probably good enough.

I think you'll find that's for much newer models than yours.
