Default Coil spring replacement - 07-30-2009 , 02:04 PM

I have a rear driver side coil spring brown at the bottom and in need of
replacement.

Are these changed as a pair or can I get away with just doing the broken
one. The other one as far as I can see looks ok.

Replace them both. New springs have more tension. It's the same with shock
absorbers.

Hmm I'm doing the same job soon, do you need spring compressors or are
the rears on the golf quite low tension ?

Also do you need to change the shocks too with new springs ?

You don't, but I always feel the most expensive part of the job is
stripping the bugger down, whilst doing one it doesn't add much to get
the other at the same time. The only downside to this principle is I got
from needing one front strut on the golf, to replacing all 4 springs n
shocks. This was partly though as decided to uprate the lot, so it got
lowered and sports shocks, so couldn't really do the front without doing
the back.

No compressors are needed with the back springs.

No, if the shocks are leaking then I'd replace them in the same go.

So to be a thread snatcher.

I have this job to do. How do you remove the rear springs on the golf ?

Laymans terms would be welcomed

No idea, but I just did the rear springs on my '84 Transporter....dead easy.

In case of any similarities, all I did was jack it up, remove wheel, undid
bottom shock absorber bolt, lowered trailing arm, popped broken spring out,
popped new spring in, bolted shock absorber back up, put wheel back on,
lowered it back to the ground and re-torqued the shock bolt....job done.

Just done it yesterday evening and it was exactly as you describe.
Thankfully I may add. Only trouble was the shock absorber bolt was a bit
seized. A spray of halfords shock and unlock and it came off thankfully.
Although its ocndition was pretty worn so I think I'll get round to getting
a new one.

By anychance do you remember the torque settings ? (not sure why I ask as I
don;t have a torque wrench after our garage being burgled!) I'm hoping to
get away with doing it nice and tight.

Thanks for the post most useful!

You're welcome, glad it helped ;o)

The torque for the shock bolt on the Transporter is 100 ft-lb
I assume it will be similar for the Golf?

Hope that helps
