Golf Mk2 Driver 1800 Mpg + clutch question

I've got a 1992 1.8 litre Driver with 230k miles on the clock!

I mostly go to work and back which is a 24 mile round trip along an A
road so I usually go at a comfortable speed 50/60. The last few times
I checked Ive got 29mpg.

However in the past I've recorded 36 mpg and also worse, 26mpg.

No work has been done on the car except for a basic service and mot.
Apart from adjusting the mixture and idle screws once or twice to get
the idle speed correct.

Is there anything I can check to see if its running as it should?

Also if I put my foot down in 3rd or above at lower revs the clutch
slips, its been doing this for ages, but for normal driving you dont
notice it. How long should I expect it to last before it gets worse?

A decoke kit and new clutch might help.

I used to get 30-35 out of my 150K mile 1.6 Driver.

Does it still have the 2e2 carb, and are you sure the autochoke, and
pull down are working right if it does?

How is the performance?

hiya
i think its a similar carb to the 1.6 possibly a slightly different
model.
performance is good other than the clutch slipping slightly if your in
too high a gear.
i would say low down its not that great, and i know the 8v gti is a
lot more responsive here, but higher in the rev range i think it
matches a gti.
strange how the gti will easily get 35-40mpg and the driver less than
30. you would think the driver would do more.
its not a big problem as i'm hoping to find a gti soon, i'm still in
love with mk2's, love the shape, refinement (for the age) and
reliability. cant see myself getting a newer golf for some time.. i'd
probably skip to a mk4 next, mk3 just doesnt do anything for me..

your foot down, it's more efficeient.

I really liked my Mk2, except that it was white.

I really liked my Mk2, except that it was white.

Best colour! IMO it means you can get by without aircon. And it's coming
back in fashion.

back in fashion.
I can't atand white cars, and the white on my Golf looked dirty

yellowish unless polished. I'd have red, given the choice.

I can't atand white cars, and the white on my Golf looked dirty yellowish
unless polished. I'd have red, given the choice.
