polo 1.4cl wont start

I have a 99 polo 1.4cl 8 valve
1. started cutting out at lights etc
2.started getting worse so cleaned throttle body with carb cleaner(with
TB in situ)
3. now wont start at all - not even fire
4. changed plugs and plug leads
5.got spark at distributor and at plugs
6.tried changing temp sensor - 2 attempts by VW delare still wrong -
would this cause non start though?
7.can here fuel pump working, but after turning over a few times and
taking a plug out-it doesnt seem to smell of petrol?

any ideas

how much Carb cleaner did you spray down the throttle body? I noticed my car
coughed for a while after spraying quite a bit in.

5. Inspect and replace distributor cap and rotar arm if faulty.

How long has the problem been on going? Do you hear any noises anywhere? as
far as I'm aware temp sensor would not stop the car starting. You just
wouldn't know how hot the car was, nor would the fan if it starts to
overheat.

Checked the ignition switch?
