Replacing VR6 Water pump -

Hi,
Long time lurker and owner of '95 Golf VR6 which is starting to show
signs of its age.
Last weekend I regreased the bone dry belt tensioner after unpleasant
noises started coming from under the bonnet but whilst I had the belt
slack discovered a huge amount of play in the water pump pulley (~5mm)
and suspect that was probably the main source of noise (I decided not to
start the engine after discovering that).
After checking on the web it sounds like one can get away with undoing
the two left hand (looking at the front of the car) engine mount bolts
and jacking up the engine to give enough clearance to get at the water
pump bolts.
Anyone have recent experience of this and words of warning/encouragement?
TIA
Rog
