Default vw lupo warning light - ahhh - 06-11-2008 , 12:39 PM

ok guys. i just hate these new cars where unless u have all the compuiter
to diagnose anything the home mechanic of some 30 years now comes to
grinding halt.

right now ive had my moan.
lupo 1.0 mpi. 52 plate 28ooo miles
exhaust emission light has come on and the engine doesnt idle as well a
it has done.
i have wiggled a few connections and cleaned up the plugs but to n
avail.
can anyone tell me what the cause of the problem is and whether i can fi
it or to i have to swallow the bitter pill and put in a vw garage to hav
it diagnosed.
all help appreciated lads.
my other peugeot diesel runs like a dream and i never have problems lik
these, although the electrics are to be desired.
many thanks for listening

Ia

Go to http://www.clublupo.co.uk, http://www.briskoda.net,
http://www.audi-sport.net, http://www.seatcupra.net,
http://www.uk-mkivs.net, or one of the other VAG forums, find a member
near you with VAG-COM (http://www.ross-tech.com), scan the codes
(usually in exchange for beer!), find what the recorded fault is, and
post the results. Without it you might be swapping expensive parts for a
while, and the warning light won't clear until after 10 fault-free
starts, I think.

Oh, and as a first thing, check the brake lights (this is not a joke).
The switches are a known weak point and can trigger limp-home mode.

One I looked at for a friend had a sticking EGR valve, we cleared the
fault and gave it an italian tune up, and it never came back :-).

I'm not suggesting the EGR valve is the fault- you *really* need to get
it scanned to find out what is wrong, or you could be there for ever.

The EGR is on the RH rear of the engine, looking from the front, I
think. On some engines, if you change or disturb it you have to re-adapt
it with VAG-COM. If you have a windows laptop, and the Lupo is yours,
it's worth buying VAG-COM (even if it's only the freeware version and a
cheap ebay cable), as £40 seems to be the going rate for a scan.

You can get manuals from dodgy Ebay sellers- it's called ELSAWin, or
from https://erwin.volkswagen.de. Remember as well that the Polo is
mechanically very similar, so a Polo manual
<http://www.haynes.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10001&storeId=10001&produ ctId=30105&langId=-1>
might help.

had the same problem on ours back in 06 before we sold it. It was a dead
plug lead. It ran like shit though so maybe yours isn't that but worth
trying new leads.
