Default replacing dip-stick tube - 11-19-2006 , 01:00 AM

Just bought a 3rd hand 2.0, 5 speed Jetta with 130k and noticed the dip
stick tube (plastic) was busted.
Anyone know ballpark how much/ how hard it is to replace and in all
probability how it broke?

TY,
Cam

The plastic gets hard and brittle from the engine heat. Simply buy a new one
from the dealer, pull out the remaining piece from the block (be careful not
to drop any pieces into the engine), and press the new one in. It will slide
in and snap in place. Took me about 30 seconds to replace mine.

They might be under $3.00 at the dealer.
If it is cold outside try to warm up the guide before pressing it into
place.
Oh and try to carefully remove the old pieces without dropping them into the
dipstick tube. 8^o
Phillips screwdriver with some vasoline/grease on it helps to get those
little pieces before they drop.

They break easily. I just snaps onto the metal part of the dipstick
tube. IIRC it's less than US$5 and takes less than 5 minutes to do.
Like Erik said, just be careful not to get any pieces go down the tube
when you remove the old one.

I'd suggest planning on doing an oil change right afterwards. That way
if you do knock some junk off, there's a reasonable chance you'll get it
out when draining the oil. If you don't, and you're not due for one
anyway, you are still going to use the oil later

You definitely want to plug the hole tho'. The PCV system pull a small
vacuum on the inside of the engine to purge out combustion gases.
Having the dipstick hole open will pull unfiltered outside air through
the engine.
