Default 97 Golf keeps shutting off - 06-30-2003 , 03:59 PM

My son's 97 Golf had a new clutch put in but we haven't got the car back
from the garage. The problem is that when you come to a stop sign, the car
stops for no particular reason. It starts back up and then perhaps it won't
do it at the next stop but another one. It's driving the mechanic mad (as
well as my son because he doesn;t have his car!). The mechanic said that he
had disconnected the battery for several days so maybe it's electrical in
nature? He does not get any error codes. Any suggestions?

If it's a diesel then have a look at the fuel pump relay, it's a common
problem.
We had the same problem with a 97P 1.9 TDI, but is started doing it at
random times and got worse.
Sorry can't remember the relay number but its black and is fitted above the
fuses.
A hairline crack forms in a solder joint on the PCB in the relay. You can
fix it with a soldering iron, but they only cost about £15 from VW.

Hope this helps,
Simon.

It's not the GTI. Just ehe basic 97 Golf.

The 2 items you mentioned, would the problems with them be because the
battery was disconnected as it was? I ask because we haven't had the
shutting off problem before.

Hi Carl.

Can you be a little more specific on the type of Golf (engine, model)? I
know that this particular fault exists with the Simos-based (Simos ECU)
Golf
GTI. It could be an air-bypass valve, or even coolant temperature sender.

Cheers

T.A.
