Default oil pressure low light on when idle - 07-08-2003 , 11:41 PM

91 Jetta GL, 25,000miles.

recently I noticed if I encounter a traffic jam, engine in idle. The oil
pressure low warning light goes on and off. It goes away when the car start
to move.

the manual says it can be caused by a clogged oil filter. So I replaced it,
and changed oil, even use engine flush to clean the whole oil route. But
it's still the same.

What else could be playing? Anyone else experienced this before?

thanks,
Ben

Are you sure you have that mileage correct? only 25 thousand for an 12
year old car is rather low. 24 thousand is also low for the kind of problem
you appear to have. It sounds like worn engine or oil pump.

If the mileage is really that low, you might be lucky and it is a stuck
pressure relief valve.

Then it will be the oilpump that is slowly leaving the building or the
engine is tired.

Or if you don't want to replace the oil pump or engine (yet) try a heavier
oil, if you have been using a lighter one. I have to use 20w50 in order to
keep this from happening, but otherwise the engine runs fine. Was told by
a parts guy that as the bearings wear, you need to use thicker oil. At
some point, of course, they will need to be replaced, but maybe you don't
want to rebuild the engine.

Replacing the oil pump is not all that hard. I'd recommend it, and I
would recommend using a 36 MM gear pump, as used on the 2.0L engine.
You will need the longer bolt for the pump that goes with the 2.0, but
it is a direct swap otherwise. If your mech does it, expect
$175-$250. I did mine at 150K for the same reason and smooth sailing
since (193K).
