Default Removing Polo airbar - 04-06-2004 , 02:57 PM

Hi,

Replacing the pesky ignition switch on my mums Polo and after removing tyhe
steering wheel couldn't figure out how the airbag connector unclips from the
back of the airbag, does it pull upwards or slide sideways? Didn't want to
force it! My old Polo coupe was easier :-/

Thanks in advance,

--Steve

I don't recommend messing with an air bag, unless you have the specific
instructions for that model/year. They can give you a real charge, even
when un-plugged.

I suggest the shop manual. I also suggest you let us know what year you
are talking about.

It's 1999 1.4, the manual instructions are 'remove the plug from the
airbag' but isn't specific as what knid of connector it is.

Never monkied with a Polo, but on many cars the air back connectors have
double latches, squeeze one place and stick a screw driver in another
place to unlatch them. You probably already know to disconnect the
battery and wait a few minutes before disconnecting the air bags.
Otherwise, aside from the risk of getting an air bag blow up in your
face, the SRS warning light will come on and may require a trip to the
dealer to reset.

Yeah, it's bad enough having explosive seat bolt tensioners under your ass,
but exploding steering wheels ;-) I guess in the event of an accident it
could make the difference between instant death and living life as a
paraplegic vegetable so I shouldn't grumble. Think VW are going to have to
do the job with danger money. They've quoted £112+tax, that's about £100 per
hour!

The Facelift 2000 on models have a yellow plastic plug, you just pull it
away from the airbag, have never done the previous model though.
