My 87 Golf GT jumps out of reverse and grinds. It will engage and then when
you back up a foot or so it will jump out.Has anybody had this problem and
figured out how to fix it? I'm trying to figure out if I need to replace the
shifter,linkage, or if it's inside the gearbox.Any help would be
appreciated.

Reverse idler gear? Basically that requires a trip into the tranny... about
8 hours plus parts.
