Default so lost, my lights won't work 82 rabbit convertible - 06-27-2006 , 04:47 PM

Alright so i have a 1982 rabbit convertible
when i first purchased it only a few lights would turn on, so i cleaned
all the plugs in the fusebox and the ends that connect to the blubs and
got most of them working.
but the next week they were not working again, i tried to clean them
up, no good
so it sat for a couple months, now im up to trying to get the lights to
work again, so i go to check, nope still only one headlight and the
rear emergency flasher that work. i go to check the plug on the fusebox
and it has tons of corroded pins and plugs, and i look closer and one
of the pins has come clean off, so deciding that will never do, i buy a
brand new fusebox, (it isn't even a day old yet) install it, nope still
the same ol' problem, really i don't do much work on cars, nonetheless
volkswagens or anything electrical,

so to get to my point i was wondering if there is a list of things i
can troubleshoot, its a neat lil' car and i would like to enjoy it, but
it's lights just won't work

please send help

The first thing you should do is buy a Bentley service manual (about $50).
Make sure you can an edition that is for your specific car. Non-functional
lights can be due to several things: bad wiring, defective connectors, blown
fuses, defective relays, defective switches, or a combination of these
things.

Your fusebox problem is probably due to leakage coming from around the
windshield frame, or from plugged rain drains located just forward of the
firewall (in the engine compartment near the bottom of the windshield.
Whatever the cause, the water leak problem must be solved or you will be
replacing your fusebox again.

But get the Bentley before doing any more work on your car. It is the best
service manual, and will be a great help in servicing your car correctly.

Not to mention the seal where the radio antenna wire comes in.
