Default 2002 Golf TDI Timing Belt Change - 11-20-2006 , 09:54 PM

The local VW dealer quoted me approx. $700 to change the timing belt and
idler pulley. Is this reasonable?

That's in the ballpark. How many miles on the engine? If it's the second
belt change you might want to have them change the water pump while they're
in there. The water pump is driven by the timing belt.

Where do you live? Over at tdiclub.com you can sometimes get referalls
to tdi friendly repair shops that may do the job for less and they
will replace all the parts correctly. Well if they are going to use
the equivilant of this kit then the price is correct. I would accept
nothing less than all the parts in the $333 kit.

91,000 I just bought the car and found this needs to be done.
Thanks

Don't waste any time in getting it changed. If the belt breaks, the engine
is toast.

That did not include all that other stuff. An independent VW shop I talked
with replaces all that stuff for about $900. The local VW dealer is a rip
off.
I live in Boise, Idaho

I am not so sure they are a rip off but they are definetly not the
best value. All those parts are wear parts that will save you money
and worries. On the outside about the serpentine belt are a few parts
that you might consider replacing. Idlers and tensioners. I need to
replace them on my 2003. Well I thought I needed to 30,000 miles ago
but it is still running the serpentine belt with no increase in noise.
If I were obsessing I would replace those parts. Ramblings off.
