Default What are compatible transmissions for 1996 manual-shift Jetta? - 01-24-2007 , 11:07 AM

I have a '96 Jetta with a shot transmission in Wisconsin. To avoid the
$3000 replacement quoted from the local VW dealer, I want to buy a used
transmission and have it installed in a local shop. I know nothing
about cars, so please help.

Using Froogle I found some listings, but I'd like to know if cheaper
transmissions from other years would be compatible too. Is there
somewhere I can find these things out? Could someone help find an
actual listing for me?

Thanks a lot,
Denise

Check the code on the bottom of the bellhousing. I think most A2s
(85-92) are compatible with A3s (93-99). I have an A2 Golf with an AUG
code tranny and I found the same tranny out of a 94 Jetta.

Don't get one of the early A2 trannys, I think 85 through 87. Those
were missing clips inside that caused the thing to grind itself to
death. Also, the early ones use a different reverse switch.

And aside from eBay, you can locate junkyard trannys here:

NOPE! Starting in 93 VW used trans which are computer controled. Here in the
USA anyways. 1996 was about the year VW had a split on transmissions. If it
has a dipstick it's the early version, without then newer. Also trans will
need to match the eCU & TCM to work correctly. Suggest finding a shop to do
a rebuild...

It is good you are asking for help BEFORE taking out a loan. :-)
What is wrong with the transmission? What is it doing or not doing?
Popping out of reverse or what?

For $3000 you could buy another '96 Jetta, even a newer one, here in
Chicago.
For a lot less you could have that trans. possibly repaired and installed.
And there are more options too!

Where in Wisconsin are you?
I also know someone up in Wisconsin, north of Milwaukee, that might be able
to help you out.

What could be computer controlled in a MANUAL transmission? And if
they were indeed different VW could certainly have used an different
transmission code.

My mistake, did read it was a stick/manual. The you should have no problems
finding a used unit, but I would stick with the correct one for your car
just to keep the ratios the same.
