When we picked up our car at the factory, the rep told us that they use part synthetic oil in the V70. We are coming up to our first service and when I made the appointment, I mentioned using part syn when they did the oil change. The service rep said that they use regular oil in the V70. In fact, while he had heard of all synthetic oil, he had never heard of part syn. Didn't enhance my opinion of his qualifications. Anyhow, my question is: what should go into the V70? The owners manual does not address type of oil, just weight. I did switch over to part syn for our prior 940 Turbo; I did the oil change myself then and may do it again with the V70 after the warranty period. BTW, it is not my intent with this posting to trigger a dialog on the pros and cons of syn vs regular oil. I just want to know if there is a Volvo recommended oil type for the V70. -- Njord I must go down to the seas again, for the call of the running tide Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied; And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying, And the flung spray and the blown spume, and the sea-gulls crying. In my personal experience, Castrol is the source of synthetic/regular blended oil. Can't think of the product name at the moment . . . |
|
Here in Reno, NV the price of regular Castrol is about $1.30/qt (regular price, better when on sale of course). The cost of their synthetic is about $4.00/qt and the blend is about $2.50/qt. Since there's no word on the percentages of the two bases present, it's hard to evaluate the merit of the mixed product, either as to "value" or performance. I've used the synthetic product (Castrol "Syntec") for several years and find that its abilities are what one would hope for in a syn oil. bob noble Reno, NV, USA |
