Default '87 760 GLE - how to identify whether ABS or not? - 01-05-2009 , 03:28 AM

Hi all,

Just wondering if there's an easy way of figuring whether my 760GLE V6
(December 1987) is equipped with ABS or not?

I've just been quoted a figure for new rotors (yeah, they're warped).
ABS type were nearly 3 times as much as non-ABS.

I know the service plate will show caliper type, but is there any
hardset rule to indicate a certain brand = ABS?

Either that or any info relating to obvious visual cues that don't
involve removing a road wheel would be much appreciated.

Oh, and I don't particularly like the idea of slamming the brakes on to
see if they lock, either...

Thanks in advance,

Andy.

Every car with ABS I've seen has an ABS warning light on the
instrument panel. The system does a self-test when you start the car,
and the light then goes out. No ABS light probably means no ABS. Also, I
*think* Volvo started offering ABS in 1990, but I'm not sure.

Look for the ABS controller, '87 has it in the trunk on the right-hand
side looking from the back of the car. It's in the well in the back,
lift up the carpet and there's a board there you can lift up and the ABS
stuff is down in there. Later models have it under the hood. You could
also pull the ABS/Power Locks fuse and see if the ABS warning light on
the dash comes on.

Slamming on the brakes does work well too, if you go on some dirt or
gravel you don't have to be going very fast.

No, my '87 740T has ABS, though I do believe that was the first year for
it. All 700s from the time it was first offered have the ABS light, and
a glow plug light, and the two different (auto/manual) overdrive lights,
and the SRS light, they used the same instrument cluster in all the
models, however the unused lights shouldn't come on during the self test.

Yes, the discs are larger on the ABS cars, there is no technical
difference aside from that.
