I get a nasty clunk from the parking brake when I pull up on the handle, when the car is moving forward maybe 5-10 MPH. |

The parking brake is a drum brake. The shoes must be quite a distance from the drum but take a while to get back. -- Cheers, Steve Henning in Reading, PA, USA Owned '67,'68,'71,'74,'79,'81,'87,'93,'95 & '01 Volvos. '93 850, 5 speed, 143K miles. I get a nasty clunk from the parking brake when I pull up on the handle, when the car is moving forward maybe 5-10 MPH. As if something's loose inside the mechanism. Parking brake mechanism also seems balky, sticks sometimes. My 1999 V70 (same basic design) has always done this from new. There is also |

Thanks for that tip on Volvospeed. I had actually read that before, but missed the mention of the 10mm pin, which has to be removed, it looks like, in order to get the rotor off. Is that pin removable on the '93 850? The picture shows a 5-lug Cross Country rotor. I have a 4-lug 850 rotor. I assume the pin comes off with a 10mm socket? Will be nice not to have to pull that large nut off. Regards, |

There is also a small amount of - presumably intentional - rotational movement of the shoes inside the drums. If you come to rest on a slight slope, using the footbrake, and then apply the handbrake, the car rolls an inch or two down the slope. It's a bit disconcerting at first, but once you get used to it, it's not a problem. Anyway, the parking brake is for . . .er . . .Parking - so you should only apply it when the car is stationary - then you won't get any nasty clunks. You have perfectly good disc brakes to stop you from any speed above zero. -- Cheers, Bonnet Lock ______ Please reply to newsgroup. Reply address is invalid. |

Had a similar clunking on my 1995 850, and was particularly bad when backing up from a cold "overnight" sit in the garage. Found that rear parking brake shoes had disintegrated!! and broken pieces of the shoe friction material were jamming between the metal shoes and the drum. Replaced parking shoes, spring kits etc. and all was fine. Mike Mayer <mayermh (AT) ix (DOT) netcom.com> wrote: '93 850, 5 speed, 143K miles. That center cap you see in the bottom 2 pictures does not need to be removed. -- Mike F. Thornhill (near Toronto), Ont. Replace tt with t (twice!) and remove parentheses to email me directly.
