'93 850, 5 speed, 143K miles.

I get a nasty clunk from the parking brake when I pull up on the handle,
when the car is moving forward maybe 5-10 MPH. As if something's loose
inside the mechanism. Parking brake mechanism also seems balky, sticks
sometimes.

I'd like to pull off the hub nuts on both sides and remove the brake rotor
so I can inspect the parking brake assembly. Anyone know the size socket
required for that large hub nut (under the removable hub cover)? Looks to
be a 35mm or 36mm socket, (more than 1-3/8", less than 1-1/2"). I have a
long 1/2" drive breaker-bar, if I can get a 1/2" drive socket big enough I
should be able to back-off that hub nut.

It also appears to be either a locknut with a nylon insert, or it has
loctite on the threads (can see something blue between the threads where
they meet the nut).

Has anyone done this?

It does it at highway speeds also. This is normal. They did it when
the were new and still do. It only happens once until you drive a
while, then you can make it do it again. The parking brake is a drum
brake. The shoes must be quite a distance from the drum but take a
while to get back.

follow instructions to remove the rotor, although as Stephen says, what
you're hearing may be normal.

Anyway, the parking brake is for . . .er . . .Parking - so you should only
apply it when the car is stationary - then you won't get any nasty clunks.
You have perfectly good disc brakes to stop you from any speed above zero.

Thanks for that tip on Volvospeed. I had actually read that before, but
missed the mention of the 10mm pin, which has to be removed, it looks like,
in order to get the rotor off.

Is that pin removable on the '93 850? The picture shows a 5-lug Cross
Country rotor. I have a 4-lug 850 rotor. I assume the pin comes off with a
10mm socket?

Will be nice not to have to pull that large nut off.

Had a similar clunking on my 1995 850, and was particularly bad when backing
up from a cold "overnight" sit in the garage. Found that rear parking brake
shoes had disintegrated!! and broken pieces of the shoe friction material
were jamming between the metal shoes and the drum. Replaced parking shoes,
spring kits etc. and all was fine.

These are two different things. The first in not common. The second is
universal. The clunk when the car is moving and you put on the brake
happens on new Volvos, at least the full sized ones with drum parking
brakes, fresh out of the factory. (I don't know if the 40/50 Volvos
have drum parking brakes) It is something that few people experience
since they don't put on the parking brake when the car is moving. I
like to use my parking brake when I am in traffic that is just creeping.
I will shut off the engine and coast using just the parking brake if
possible. It only clunks the first time unless you wait a while and
drive over bumps and stuff so the slack that causes the clunk comes back.

AH, yes, I see from those pix that the hub cover is still there. Before
reading all this, I did pop it off, thinking I had to back off the big nut.
Luckily, I don't. AND luckily it's on so tight that I didn't back it off.
That probably would not have been much fun.
