.....I always liked NGs, you can control the downloads and how it is displayed, (mostly) no advertising and 1 password. Now I have 1 for each 'forum'. Seems the lack of support and revenue from NGs is driving people away to free services that look pretty, with the associated advertising. |

I have noticed a serious decline in News Group postings in all areas over the last few years, most people seem to use web forums now, as many ISP don't give news servers any more. I am using a free service but its not without problems. |

I have noticed a serious decline in News Group postings in all areas over the last few years, most people seem to use web forums now, as many ISP don't give news servers any more. I am using a free service but its not without problems. A lot of ISPs have few users making use of the NNTP servers, there is no monetization possible and it costs money and hassle to run the server and have someone sysop it. ISPs mostly want you to just se a Web browser and stop bothering them with news clients, mail clients, FTP, etc. Happily my ISP is an exception and not only provides those old fashioned accoutrements, I get a static IP and can run my own Web server if I wish. I always liked NGs, you can control the downloads and how it is displayed, (mostly) no advertising and 1 password. Now I have 1 for each 'forum'. And Web fora software is typically slow, ugly, cannot quite readily, screws up attributions, etc. And is periodically hacked requiring all the participants to re-register with new screen names and passwords... Seems the lack of support and revenue from NGs is driving people away to free services that look pretty, with the associated advertising. There's never really been revenue from newsgroups. I think that the vast majority of Internet users simply don't know Usenet exists- and of course with it there is the expectation of a modicum of literacy beyond Dood-, U R a penies-hed LOL! !!! which is about the limit of the writing abilities of most Web forum users (there are exceptions, of course). If they post to Usenet they are mocked for being clueless and idiotic, so they stick to Web fora. Fine by me! |

There's never really been revenue from newsgroups. I think that the vast majority of Internet users simply don't know Usenet exists- and of course with it there is the expectation of a modicum of literacy beyond Most major ISP's have dropped usenet all together, it forced me to find a free usenet service elsewhere to use. Combine that with a whole generation that has never heard of usenet, and things like AOL and Google Groups that allow people to participate in usenet groups whilst believing they are in a google group don't help either. I wish I had a dollar for each time someone posted something they wanted, then when asked their location said "just look at my profile" not realizing that the majority of the participants are on usenet where there is no concept of profiles. |
