change because the present fluid was discolored. When I pointed out that
the same dealer had performed this service in August 2004, I was told that
Volvo's specs had changed - in 2004 all that was done was that 50% of the
fluid was changed and that this year, the pan was removed, the system
flushed with a solvent, and 100% of the fluid was changed. I wonder if the
dealer, which up to now has done excellent work on my two Volvos, is telling
me the truth or just adding unneeded services to the bill? (The car was
driven 7,000 miles between transmission fluid changes.) Any informed
comments would be appreciated?

1. The 850 transmission has no pan, there's just a drain plug in the
bottom of the casting.
2. I wouldn't flush with a solvent, it would be too tough to get all
the solvent back out.
3. You can flush the fluid with new transmission fluid, this is the
best way to handle dirty fluid.

Sounds like a big RIP OFF to me... Todays Transmission fluids hold up much
longer than previous types... If anything, Volvo should be extending their
mileage between flushes... 30,000 miles has been standard...

If you still have the owners manual look up
the reccommened trans fluid change interval
and what is the correct fluid type?
This could be helpful info.

Otherwise it sounds like your dealer is
tying to get you to contribute to their
profit center.
