Can anyone suggest the most likely location of the short? I don't want to

If you don't have a Haynes Manual get one. In the back are wiring diagrams.
Find the wires to that fuse, check the colors, then disconnect all but one
at the fuse box. Plug items back in until you find the culprit.

Just guessing, but it might be a wire to one of the door button switches
that turns on the interior lights when you open the door.

Hmmmm....I just looked at my own Haynes manual and all the wires on a fuse
are the same color....they aren't in my fuse box but they are in the wiring
diagram.

If all the wires are connected to one fuse box tab, I would think the only
way to isolate each wire would be to cut the connector off, check the wires
with a test light, and then install a new connector. Connect the test light
to something hot (12 volts) and then connect the other end to each of the
separated wires at the bulb, clock end of the wire until the light comes on;
you've found the grounded wire. I would remove the bulbs from the various
lights before the tests, disconnect the clock, etc. Drive the car and hit a
bump, if that's what it takes.

Check the wire to the under hood light, it's really common for the
insulation to rot out on the wiring under the hood with the older cars, they
changed over to better wiring in the late 80's.

Well ........

James you are.

Flipped the hood, one look there's the wire that connects to the light.

Can see copper.

30 sec's of blackish tape.

And off we go.

Thanks,

and thanks to Brick_O and Mike (who sounded like he would have sent me under
the hood if James hadn't got there first.

Once again my reason for owning a volvo or two has been re-affirmed.

Paul

PS I think Volvo might be interested in your DNA guys.
