when I replaced the in-tank pump about a year ago ('89 240 wagon), I used a
wrench that's normally used to tighten the fitting at the bottom of a sink.
It was made of thick metal, had two projecting jaws, and was adjustable
enough to fit them into the slots in the cover. That, plus another
(crescent) wrench to give me leverage, and it worked fine. I chose that
because a friend had one on hand, there are probably other (better) choices,
or you might be able to make one out of scrap metal.....

Yeah. I suppose you could do what the Bentley manual (and lots of other
people) suggest(s) and use a pair of screwdrivers.

IMO the bung nut tool is worth its cost, it makes pulling the pre-pump a
simple job (once you remove the other maddening fasteners). I paid about
$30 for one from IPD.

If you (or anyone else really) are in the SF Bay Area, I'd be more than
willing to loan the tool out.

I used on my 740, a tool I already had in my house in the kitchen. My wife
had bought a tool for opening cans of various sizes. It is like a pair of
pliars for opening big jars of pickles with various sizes of jaws at varoius
depths. The biggest one fits the jam jar type opening on the top of the fuel
tank. The cost was £1.25 from Asda/Walmart a few years ago.

I'm sure the tool makes it easier but I made about a half dozen
trips into my 245's gas tank last year using only a big
screwdriver and a hammer. I'd just tap around the edges of the
raised tabs and it would pop right out. I think the wagon would
be a lot easier to do this in than a sedan since you can get
right over the bung and see what you're doing. Also I think the
wagons are less prone to rust in that area than sedans. I like
using good tools as much as the next guy but I didn't find the
screwdriver method all that bad.

My dad and I ended up dropping the tank in his 242 to get the corroded bung
nut off. That was actually pretty easy once we figured out where to
disconnect the fuel lines.
