From a point at sea, to the circles of your mind, this is Wayland
Twiston-Davies:

I'm currently driving a '96 850CD estate, my second 850 and my third Volvo,
great car in many respects but the rear door (tailgate) rattles like hell
just like it did in my previous 850 and come to think of it the 740 also. I
think I heard there was a repair kit for a rattling 850 door, is this true,
and does anyone have the part number and an indication of the cost in the
UK.
It's funny you should mention this. I've just spent *years* trying to
pin down a rattle from the back of my 740 estate. I've moved or
re-secured every moving part I could find; I've taken the door panel
off and stuffed padding around everything inside it; I've carted
friends around in the load area trying to find where this pesky rattle
is coming from. Two weeks ago I discovered it was the door itself
rattling in the frame.

I've no idea about the 850, but on the 740 there is a plastic wedge on
each side of the tailgate door that fits into a tapered housing in the
opening, when the door is shut. Theses wedges are adjustable up and
down a little so that they make a snugger fit into the housing. A dab
of grease is a good idea too.

Now I have a rattle-free car again. Bliss.

I have owned 10 volvos, 8 were/are wagons. A couple developed the tail
gate rattle. The dealer adjusted the latch to prevent it.

The rear panel of my 850 estate was damaged when our rear window was
broken in a smash-n-grab. (They took clothes destined for the homeless
shelter no less... No good deed goes unpunished.)

I dislodged my rear door panel and saw that four of the eight plastic
tabs (2 of the top and two of the bottom) that attach it to the door had
broken off. However, removing the panel did not get rid of the little
rattle I had. Thus, trying taking yours off and see if that is the
source of the rattle before going further. IPD has instructions for
removing the door on their website. However, the IPD repair kit only
repairs the top four anchor points. Instead, someone on this board
suggested drilling a hole and screwing the door down.

I looked on my 94 850 tailgate door (also the source of rattles) and didn't
see anything like that. Other 850 owners??
