I've had belts squeal, but I can't say that I've ever heard one "groan."

Be that as it may - you need to look into the engine compartment over
the right front fender, looking at the "belts end" of the engine. The
idler pulley that you see, midway down the cover of the cam drive cover,
is an eccentric mount and contains the spring that provides accessory
belt tension. These do fail. Not a design weakness, but something that
does happen.

There should be enough tension for you to have to push fairly hard on
the longest reachable run of the accessory drive belt in order to "bend"
it at all. There's some figure for belt tension, but the need for a
fairly hard push says it's OK. As a final touch, a spritz of belt
dressing should overcome any glaze that might be a contributor to
noises.

The tool to de-tension the belt and two replacement belts, ordered from
"ipd," cost me less than having my friendly Dealer replace a belt that
had passed its sell-by date. Your owners' manual will give you the
mileage at which to make a change - the wife's off with our '98 V70XC,
so I can't look in the manual at this point.

If you mean engine belts I would try some belt squeal cure. It comes in many
forms but I have used Belt Quiet on my VW GTI and it worked quite well. Of
course the VDub would squeal when it got the least bit damp out so I'll let
you draw the conclusions.

Hello, I have a '98 S70 (base model), and it sounds like the belts are
groaning. This is probably a minor adjustment, but one I was hoping
to do myself. I am good with tools and instructions, but I have never
done belt adjustment or replacement before. Can anyone point me to a
manual of some kind for help in this? Looking to become a little more
independent from my mechanic. TIA.

Dear god, Volvos are such crap.
This sounds like a timing belt roller tensioner or idler problem. If
so I'd be inclined to let it groan. Might be early water pump fault-
check for coolant traces. Is it timing belt time yet? If so I think
new rollers and tensioners come in a kit with the belt, like Renault
(another pile of crap)
Good luck

I think the group would be interested to know what car you think isn't a
pile of crap. If not I certainly would. Let us know when you get a chance.

I appreciate your candor - it has been daignosed as the former (roller
tensioner +idler). The issue is, I need to sell the car quickly, bc I
have to drop the loan payment. Anyway, I won't have much option (with
the irritating volume and nature of the noise) - so, what are you
referring to when you give caution? Is it because the engine needs
to be opened up to do the work? I notice that it hasn't affected
performance at all, but as I say, it will be impossible to

So sorry about that. Incomplete message - it would be impossible to
tolerate the noise without losing thousands in resale value. So, I
guess the question is - do you know how much I can expect to pay (not
at a dealer)?P/Ns are as follows:

Idler – 9146139

Belt – 9186352

Tensioner assembly – 1275380

TIA to any and all
