I recently bought a 2001 S80. It has 40,000 miles. After reading some of
the
horror stories about the S80s - mostly 1999-2000, it seems imparative that
I
purchase an extended warranty to 100,000 miles.

But I'm at a loss to pick an insurer. There are a lot of companies on the
Net. My Volvo dealer sells a plan. They all sound about the same, with
some
differences in cost.

So, my question: If you've purchased an extended warranty, has it been a
good experience? If so, would you recommend the company? If you've had a

Thanks for any advice.

Most "aftermarket" extended warrantees protect the insurer very well through
numerous exclusions. This includes aftermarket warrantees sold by the
dealer. They are about the equivalent of extended warrantees sold by
electronics retailers. They add nicely to the bottom line of the seller.

That being said if you can get a manufacture's extended warrantee ( ie.
actually sold and backed by VOA or Ford) then that might be a good deal.
They are usually sold only at the time of new car purchase. If they are
wrapped up in the new car purchase then sometimes you can negotiate on the
price of the warrantee since the dealer markup on the OEM extended
warrantees is usually 2-2.5X. With my last two new car purchases I was able
to get the dealer to throw in the OEM warrantee at just above their cost in
order to close the deal.

I went for Volvo's "VIP" (Volvo Increased Protection) Plan. A promo for
the Plan was included in the packet of goodies that came with the car at
the time of purchase. It was expensive at about $2,500, but this was
complicated by a) car 30 months old when policy purchased, b) mileage at
time of purchase was about 49,999 (+/-), c) Turbo car premium and d) AWD
car premium (we're talking about a 98 V70XC). An incentive to buy was a
perceived potential for an AWD problem - which has never happened.
Don't know that it made a difference in anything, but we were the
original owners. Coverage is 6 years, 120,000 miles.

I went for the VIP plan because we planned to drive coast-to-coast, and
I felt that "Volvo's own" policy would be better received by *any* Volvo
dealer in *any* locale.

The only use has been here at home, replacing the ABS Control Module. I
was not even charged the full amount of the $50 standard deductible,
only about $30 - no idea why. The price for this repair, parts & labor,
was a bit over $500.

When an 02 S60AWD was added to our "fleet," there was no solicitation
for the VIP program. I think more Dealers, like ours, are going for
"Brand X" policies - perfectly legit, I'm sure, but with a better margin
of profit for them. Of course, this also opens the matter for a
negotiated price.

The major insuror behind the VIP program, by the way, is Fireman's Fund.
The Plan's phone number doesn't fall to hand, but their address is:

Fireman's Fund Insurance Co.
VIP Plan Department
16501 Ventura Blvd.
Encino, CA 91436-2023

No, I don't get a spiff on the premium if you buy one . . .

We went with the VIP plan for our 960... IT included free schedualed oil
changes.... so we got the oil done every like 4 months or something like
that for the first 5-6 years or whatever for free.... Too bad nothing broke,
we bought it only because the 960 was so much more sophisticated then our
740GLE 16 Valve was... we figured there was more to go wrong, the 960
provided us better reliability then the 740 actually.
