Hi all,

Lately, when I lower the front passenger-side window, at about 80% down
it makes a rough grinding noise. I don't know of anything that got down
in there, though I can't rule it out. Anyone have any ideas/suggestions
about what it is and what to do about it?

Thanks.

The rear window guide bolts on below the lock mechanism. The window
passes so close to the lock that there's actually no guide there. As
the window passes the lock it goes into a piece of rubber that hooks on
over the top of the bolt on guide which is hooked over the top to hold
it in place. That piece of rubber is now sitting in the bottom of the
door. This description won't help much until you see the parts, so take
off you door panel. Follow the track below the lock and unbolt it at
the bottom (one bolt visible on the outside of the door, hooked at the
top) and remove it. Reach into the bottom of the door and grab the
rubber piece. Analyse whether you can reattach it or if you need a new
one. Reassemble.

Thanks for the clear description. I understand what your saying. Is it
doable and foolproof enough for someone handy with a screwdriver, but
whose never taken apart the side doors (I have pulled the inside cover
off the rear door, using the IPA instructions.) and without a garage or
driveway to leave stuff lying around?

Regards.

Funny thing, I drove the S70 last night after changing the oil (usually
my wife drives it) and it's doing the same thing. I've already done the
V70 once, guess what I'll be doing tonight.

The hardest part of the job is taking the door panel off, if you can do
that, you can do the rest. You don't have to disable the car in any way
to do this job, just make sure that you don't put the window down while
the track is out!

Okay I fixed the S70 last night. The hole in the rubber that hooks onto
the metal channel had been ripped out. I also noticed that there was
wear only on one surface of the rubber, and there was a corresponding
unused hole on the other side. The rubber was symmetrical! So I took
apart the passenger door, stole the rubber from it (also wear on only
one side, but much less of course) and installed it in the driver's door
channel and vice versa. I also glued them in with silicone sealer, I
hope that's not a mistake. Removing the door edge light makes a handy
access hole to hold the channel in place when you're reinstalling. Also
you have to make sure that the last inch of rubber from the top of the
door feeds into the metal channel properly when you're reinstalling.
