OK, Mike. Thanks for the info. I'll go looking for the vestigial stick.

I noticed on the engine dipstick, the part of the stick above the max oil
level appears to be 'burned'. It is discolored and has a hard varnished
appearance. Again, this is on the stick above the level where it sits in the
oil bath.

The car has 14k miles on it. Is this normal, or something I should be
worrying about?

Thanks, Jon
A little bit on the dipstick seems to be normal. Moisture from the
blowby gases seem to get up there and when cooled because of the
location in the airflow at the front condensation forms. Using a high
quality oil and changing it frequently seems to minimize it. I have a
little on my 100,000 km '98 V70 which has always used synthetic oil
changed at 8000 km intervals, whereas my wife's 200,000 km '98 S70
bought used at 142,000 km has much more. I'm surprised to hear you have
noticeable buildup already though.

Jon -

I've got the same car as you. Mine has 83k miles on it. I recently had
similar experiences in that I noticed that you could really feel the car
downshift as well as a little thump when putting into gear.

I took it to the dealer and they told me that the transmission fluid was
burned - an early indication that the transmission is on its way out... not
something that I was particularly happy to hear.

2001 S60 turbo, automatic. It's been hot around here. Car sat out all
day
undriven in temp's of low 100's, but this shouldn't be a factor. I hope.

Wife went to drive it, reverse made a loud clunk. Then into drive and it
had
no power. I tried and found same symptom, felt like belt problem?? I
looked
around under hood (and in book) or tranny oil dipstick, couldn't find it.
Where is it anyway?

Just got it back from dealer and they replaced the "immobilizer antenna".
I
asked what that had to do with the transmission and the guy couldn't
really
tell me. That was the only code in the computer.

Then my wife tells me she saw an indicator on the dash she has never seen
before (I don't drive it often enuf to be familiar with it). On the dash
panel that shows the gear you are in and the time & outside temp, in
between
the time and the gear, she saw a little black oil can. There is nothing
in
the book about this. Her imagination or an undocumented warning light?
Anyone know.

Anyway, car is back with a new immobilizer antenna and drives normally.
Stranger than fiction? Can anyone offer any enlightenment to this weird
experience?

Thanks,
Jon

Another post highlighting that if you want the auto box to last, you should
ignore the "filled for life" rubbish and replace the fluid at ~20k mile
intervals....
