Mine lasted to about 180,000 miles before I destroyed them by moving
some concrete slabs.

Hi guys,

How long would I expect a set of standard shock absorbers on the 740 to
last? My '90 740 is still on its original set of shock absorbers and the
car's almost done 150,000km (93,750miles). I don't do a lot of off-road
driving or hard cornering. When should I expect to replace them?

It really depends on the road conditions and driving style. Over time,
though, the seals will leak and the shocks will just wear out. I would
consider replacing them soon, maybe shop around. With new ones, you should
feel the difference - you've gotten used to the old shocks over time.

My 940 did a front shocky after about 120 000km, plenty of oil and mess.
New heavier duty gas, stiffened up the front end like you wouldn't believe,
handled better than new, got rid of (most of) the body role and especially
the nose diving into hard corners. Put heavy duty springs in the back,
putting my boat on or a couple of adults in the back, made it sag so much it
looked pretty second rate. New springs also helped handling and took the
floating soggy feeling out of it and is far better to drive for hours on end
on the highway.

My previous 240 replaced originals at about 240 k km went for stiffer, new
rear springs and wider tyres with a lower profile Yokahama A 509's (second
only to Pirelli p6000's in the wet in my opinion) never had the front left
tyre wear the edge off it ever again. Previously a constant problem, alway
rotating to get most out of them.

Feel free to change susupension and tyres (size and make) you can give
yourself a new car if you get the combo right.
