s40 headlight bulbs

Hi

I've got a 98 UK S40 and the right side daylight bulb keeps on dying, the
full beam bulb is okay and has not had to be replaced but the right side
daylight one has been replaced a number of times, I've told the Volvo
service dealer to check the electronics for possible problems but every
check comes back okay and he just says it because the lights are on alot and
wear and tear of the bulbs mean they go.

I find it hard to believe that the one side bulb continually breaks down
while the rest are okay, I could understand if both daylight bulbs kept on
dying but its only the right side one, any ideas what might be happening?

There was fix for this - a new headlamp wiring harness which my dealer gave
me under warranty. It is a known problem fixed in 2000(?).

I had the problem with my left-hand dipperd-beam bulb but it appears there

is a small crack in the base of the lens which was allowing moisture in and
affecting life of the bulb. Apart from that, I used the procedure in the
manual to disable the daylight-running lights as I can't think for the life
of me why I'd want to drive around in daylight with my lights on.

The idea of daytime running lights is to make the car more visible. It is a
matter of safety - your's and other drivers'.

It depends on the color of the car. Light colors are practical in hot
climates, but don;t stand out from the surroundings very well.

I hope that visibility considerations in Spain have changed since my first
visit in Madrid in 1969. It was a terrifying experience to ride in a taxi
at night, with no headlights at all, at the highest speed the Spanish-made
Fiat could reach. My Spanish was (and still is) inadequate to get the
driver to either slow down or let me out.

I was there at an international science meeting. As part of the
registration fee, we each got an accident insurance policy. The fine print
said we were not covered is we did anything dangerous. Once we saw the
Madrileno's driving habits, we agreed that leaving the hotel in the morning
was dangerous. I must add, however, that on my last visit, about four
years ago, I saw the Madrileno's were driving more safely.

I wonder if something similar affected the 98 model.

My 1999 UK S40 had its headlamp wiring harness changed under warranty for
this problem. And several engine management software upgrades.
